Academy Awards are intended to give recognition and celebrate the excellence of individuals in the film industry. These awards are issued by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, members of which nominate and vote for the winners of different categories and awards. There are various awards that are presented to actors, directors, writers and other professionals within the film industry. These awards come under different categories, each important in their own right, and are a testimony to the diverse spectrum of talent in the film industry that deserves to be recognized. There are currently 24 categories for Academy Awards, with nominations for each category and the winner of each category receiving an Academy Award.
Among the most important categories for Academy Awards, include Best Actor and Best Actress in a Leading Role. These categories are designed to acknowledge actors of high caliber who deliver and outstanding performance in a film. It is usually lead actor’s or actress’ performance which determines a film’s success. The categories Best Actor and Best Actress in Supporting Roles recognize the value and performance of actors, who are not lead actors, however, they contribute to the film’s success.
These Actor and Actress categories are limited to five nominations for each category. Nominations are made by members of the Academy who are actors themselves, and winners are voted by all members. It is possible that a person is nominated more than once for a category and across different categories. By the same token, individuals can also win more than one Academy Award.
Another important category is the Academy Award for Best Picture. This category is designed to recognise a successful and high quality film that is the product of collaboration of the actors, director, producer and writers involved in making the film. Nominations for this category are made by all Academy members. This award is the last Academy Award that is presented at the event, highlighting its value, and is collected by the film’s director and producer. An award in this category is only formally credited to the producer of the Best Picture film.
Best Director is also an important category in the Academy Awards. This category recognises the efforts of directors who has an important role in making and supervising the film. Best Original Screenplay and Best Adapted Screenplay are categories for Academy Awards that acknowledge writers who have written highly commendable scripts in films. Academy Award for Adapted Screenplay is a category that recognises excellent scripts that exhibit similar concepts to past films but uses an approach that makes it stand out from any other. This category is also for scripts of films that have been adapted from a novel, play or short story.
